Shading/Value Still Life Study Objective Students will learn about applying shading and value in still life drawings. Students will study a still-life set up made from foam shapes to show lighting on the surface of the objects: highlights and shadows. Students will build their shading techniques from this assignment. Procedure Students will be introduced to shading and value concepts from a PowerPoint Presentation. Students will be given a packet of shading and value exercises to complete together as a class. Teacher will demonstrate the techniques as the students follow along. After the packet has been completed, students will complete a still life drawing studying objects placed on their desks. The objects are foam shapes/forms, so students can study how light hits the surface of the objects and where the shadows are as well. Students will turn in their shading and value packet. Students will take an image of their still-life drawing and turn it in using NEO. You will need to complete a 3-5 sentence reflection about the still-life drawing: what you learned about, the techniques you used, whether or not you liked the assignment, your strengths, and what could be improved. • Use 5 wooden shapes • Take photo of wooden shapes with iPad • Use images from iPad as your visual guide to draw the still life • Draw all 5 shapes • Shade in shapes using the 5 different shading techniques: 1 shape use hatching technique, 1 shape use the cross-hatching technique, 1 shape use the stippling technique, 1 shape use the scribbling technique (curlicues) and 1 shape use the blending technique. • Add cast shadowing • Add horizon line separating the background from foreground (tabletop and wall) • Add some definition /details of the background and foreground.
Materials Needed: Pencil Drawing Paper 11x14 or 12x18 Eraser Blending sticks, if needed Shading/Value packet Still life foam shapes/forms Assignment is worth 25 points. Submit the final artwork image in NEO for grading.
• Time, care, effort and creativity put into the assignment (assignment doesn't seem rushed) • Individual art skill development • Student used their own image of the shapes set-up to draw from (visual guide on iPad) • Student did not copy a drawing from the internet • Student applied shading techniques we learned in class: HATCHING, CROSS–HATCHING, BLENDING, STIPPLING, SCRIBBLING • Student added horizon line to separate background and table top • Student applied shading on the different shapes/forms, and cast shadows • Student used class time wisely to complete the assignment (stayed on-task and not distracted by devices) • Student submitted assignment in a timely manner
