Module 4: Principles of Design in Photography

  1. Students will learn:
    • The Elements of Art and Principles of Design and how the terms apply to photography as a form of art
    • Examine image examples of each art term in relation to the definition of the art term
    Students will apply:
    • The knowledge they learned from this lesson to their photo assignment
    Students will create:
    1. Images of their own showing creative and artistic examples of the art terms

    Assignment:
    Take photos showing an example of each principle of design:
    1. Contrast
    2. Unity
    3. Emphasis
    4. Scale/Proportion
    5. Movement
    6. Rhythm / Pattern
    7. Balance

​Module 5: Photoshop

Overview
  1. Introduction to Photoshop: workspace navigation
  2. Learning Photoshop basics: layers, selection tools, copy/paste
Assignments:
  1. Building a sandwich in Photoshop (layers, selection tool, copy/paste)
  2. Building a pizza in Photoshop (layers, selection tool, copy/paste)
  3. Building a jack o'lantern in Photoshop
  4. Building a Veggie Person in Photoshop

Module 6: Photoshop Continued

Overview

  1. Introduction image editing in Photoshop: white balance, color correcting, levels, filters
  2. Learning about image restoration in Photoshop: clone stamp, healing brush tools
Assignments:
  1. Warm-Up
  2. Color correcting images: color image, black and white image, sepia toned image, colorized black and white image (5 images)
  3. Photo restoration: restoring an old photo, colonizing an old photo, cleaning up dusty photo (2 images)

Module 7: Netflix's Stranger Things Inspired Image

Overview
  1. Applying learning about camera functions/exposure and photoshop basics to create eerie/spooky image inspired by the Netflix show Stranger Things. 
  2. Working with cameras, digital files, Photoshop, and also drawing digitally
  3. Story writing
Assignment 
  1. Watching trailers of Stranger Things season 1–4
  2. Lesson on Stranger Things inspired image: original image, copy of image (spookily enhanced), reflected spooky image (upside down realm), and digitally drawing the creature in the upside down world
  3. 5-7 sentence backstory about the digitally drawn creature

Module 8: Surreal Imagery

Overview
  1. Learning about photographer Jerry Uelsmann and surreal imagery (traditional and digital art)
  2. Learning about surrealism in photography
  3. Applying learning about camera functions/exposure and photoshop basics to surreal image assignment

Assignment
Create a surrealistic scene using any images (your own, unsplash, or Google)
Use the Photoshop tools like clone stamp, selections, and painting to achieve something believable, but impossible.


Criteria
Final scene should show proof of using Photoshop tools
Final scene should be "realistic" with a twist of fantasy!
Final scene should show understanding of what surrealism is

Please submit the link to your Weebly Website of your digital portfolio featuring your original artwork from this term.
Make sure your portfolio is all about YOU. Personalize it, stylize it, keep it professional.
Website must have:
Home page
About Me page (your mini auto-biography)
Portfolio page with your work

  • Submit your Weebly website address in Canvas. Make sure the link works for grading! 
  • Add 2-3 sentences about EACH assignment and your intent for the assignment. 
Tips on organization:
For your portfolio page:
• Add a page for Module 1
• Add text box for your summary about the assignment
• Add image gallery to upload your images from that module
