Overview In the first week of MAT 112, we learned the difference between vector and pixels. We learned the difference between CMYK and RGB color profiles. We were introduced to Adobe Illustrator. We learned about the shape tool, fill colors, stroke, stroke sizing, layers palette and sub layers. We created two projects: one creating a shape design, and one circle composition.
Statement So far learning Illustrator has been ok. The tools and interface are a bit different than Photoshop, so I am just getting more comfortable using the new application.

Module 2: Justin Maller
Overview In the Justin Maller module, we learned about low-poly art and about the digital artist, Justin Maller. We learned how to use the gradients: linear, radial, and free-form. We learned how to use the pen tool and the selection tool to select specific anchor points.
Statement What is something you did well? I think I did really well making all the low-poly shapes with the pen tool. I also made sure I didn't leave any gaps between my shapes so the background wasn't showing through. What is something you would improve on with more time/next time? Although I really liked doing the Jabba the Hut photo, a lot of the greens blended in together. Maybe I would choose a different image with more color variations.

Module 3: Typography
OVERVIEW: We learned about typography. We learned how to use the text tool in Illustrator. We learned how to fill text with a clipping mask of an image. We learned how to outline text and turn text into a "shape" so we can manipulate text. We created a one-word design and also a quote design.
STATEMENT: Why did you choose this quote? I chose the quote from the book, The Perks of Being a Wallflower because it is my favorite book. The quotes I chose for my project resonate with me entirely. What is one thing you learned in this assignment? I learned how to manipulate text and use the path tool for text.

Module 4: Illustration
OVERVIEW In this module we learned about creating illustrations for cityscapes or landscapes. We learned more about digital artists and how to sell our artwork. We learned more tools and techniques in Illustrator: such as the pencil, brush, and blob brush tools. We learned how to wrap text on a path. We had to make a landscape or cityscape illustration then create a location poster.
STATEMENT I chose to make my location poster of an image I took at Joshua Tree National Park. That was my first visit to Joshua Tree. We went there for my husband's birthday. It was super cold that visit, but we had a lot of fun seeing the different sites and walking around and climbing the boulders.

Module 5: Portraiture
OVERVIEW: In this module, we learned how to create a digital portrait in Illustrator. We applied our knowledge of the skills and tools we learned from the previous assignments in order to complete this assignment. We learned how to make a portrait appear realistic. We learned how to work with multiple layers. We learned how to draw hair in Illustrator. STATEMENT: I chose to make a digital portrait of the 528 Flight Crew station kitty who passed away during the station fire. I wanted to make this to print for the crew and for my husband, who is the superintendent for Flight Crew 528.

Module 6/7: Calendar
OVERVIEW: (Tell me what we learned from the module.) In this module, we learned about how to create a cohesive, themed 12-month calendar using Illustrator. We learned how to create 12 artboards. We had to chose whether to create 12 individual months or 1 giant poster-like calendar. STATEMENT: (Tell me about your calendar theme, 12-months or individual poster and why...give details.) For my calendar, I chose a Harry Potter theme to make for my son. Each month, I illustrated a character according to the character's birth month: Harry Potter = July. I asked my son who is favorite characters are from the series and he shared that with me. Overall, I am pleased with the outcome, theme, and design.
