Objective Students will learn about one-point and two-point perspective drawing and space. Students will create a cityscape street scene with shops and skyscrapers that will be using one or two vanishing points.
Procedure Students will learn the difference between shape and form. Students will begin by drawing shapes, turning the shapes into form, and then adding a vanishing point to achieve the concept of one-point perspective. Added challenge: two-point perspective, bird’s eye view, and worm’s eye view. Students can challenge themselves to doing these different perspective drawings. After the drawing is completed, you will take a photo of your drawing with your iPad. Using your iPad and Drawing Desk or Adobe Draw, you may add wintery items to your drawing in color such as a snow man, or light blue snowflakes.
Materials Needed: Drawing paper Pencil Black fine-tip marker Packet iPad
Assignment is worth 25 points Submit the final artwork image in NEO/Canvas for grading.
Vocabulary Terms: One-Point Perspective: a drawing technique that uses a single vanishing point to create the illusion of space Two-point perspective: linear perspective in which parallel lines along the width and depth of an object are represented as meeting at two separate points on the horizon that are 90 degrees apart as measured from the common intersection of the lines of projection. Shape: shapes are flat, enclosed area that are two-dimensional (length and height). Artists use both geometric and organic shapes. Form: forms are three-dimensional (length, width, height) and can be viewed from many angles. Forms have volume and take up space. Vanishing Point: a point of disappearance. The vanishing point is a spot on the horizon line to which the receding lines diminish. Unity: Unity means that all elements within the artwork are in harmony. Variety within the elements adds interest to the composition. Variety: Variety is a principle of design that refers to a way of combining visual elements to achieve intricate and complex relationships. It is a technique used by artists who wish to increase the visual interest of their work. Straight Edge: Another word for ruler or straight edge of a surface Converging Lines: The lines that connect the shapes or forms to the vanishing point to create space.
Essential Questions: What is the difference between shape and form? How does adding a vanishing point change the drawing? How do converging lines create the look of distance (perspective) in a drawing?
Perspective Drawing Grading: Student drew a one or two point perspective drawing Student used a ruler to draw the converging lines (and erased them) Student used a vanishing point (or two) Student put time, thought, and effort into art assignment Student used class time wisely (stay on task and completed assignment in a timely manner) Student completed drawing in pencil, colored pencil, sharpie, or used paint or markers Student used the entire paper for their drawing
